Dominican Order

Dominican Order
Western monastic order founded by the Spanish priest Saint Dominic. It was sanctioned by Pope (q.v.) Honorius III in 1216 as an order whose special mission was to preach and teach. During the Latin occupation of Constantinople (q.v.) Dominicans fluent in Greek established a convent in Pera (q.v.) where they were active on behalf of controversial issues that divided the churches, e.g., papal primacy and the filioque (qq.v.). The Summa Theologica, the great work of the Dominican theologian Thomas Aquinas (q.v.), influenced several Byzantine writers, including Demetrios Kydones (q.v.), who translated it into Greek.
